What is Hosting?

While website pages are designed and developed on a single computer, they must be transferred to a server, or host, so that they are available to the rest of the world over the Internet. A host is simply a computer that has a constant, high-speed connection to the Internet. Hosting companies rent space on these machines.Hosting (also known as Web site hosting, Web hosting, and Webhosting) is therefore the business of housing, providing a server, and maintaining files for one or more Web sites. Depending on your needs, a hosting plan can cost anywhere between $15 and $300 per month.

Hosting your web site

Once your domain name is registered, you (or we) will need to do the following: Hire some hosting (server) space to 'host' your website. iLook Design hosts all clients that it builds websites for as this makes hosting very convenient. The term web site hosting describes the physical location of a website, or where the web site files physically 'live'. The levels of the hosting services vary and the cost of hosting your website will usually be measured by the amount of hosting server space you will need. The larger the size of your web site, the more server space needed for your site and hence the higher the cost.

Once you have registered with iLook Design for hosting, you will be given what's known as the FTP details of your website. This is essentially a user name and password that will allow us to transfer your website files to the host server to make it live. Don't worry about the details, as once we have the information required, we can manage the whole of the process for you.
